IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is an applications-driven technical community focused on advancing the current state-of-the-art in technologies such as mobile radio, land transportation, and motor vehicles. Our global community is active in the creation and dissemination of new theoretical concepts and knowledge.
Many VTS members are also engaged in applying these new concepts to a variety of real-world products and systems in order to solve challenging technical problems. One activity that supports the transformation of theory into practice is the creation of technical standards.
According to IEEE Standards Association, standards are "published documents that establish specifications and procedures designed to maximize the reliability of the materials, products, methods, and/or services people use every day." Given the rapidly increasing complexity of numerous systems and technologies we use today, standards are necessary in order to ensure interoperability, streamline manufacturing processes, and guarantee product quality and performance.
In fact, IEEE Standards Association states that "standards address a range of issues, including but not limited to various protocols to help maximize product functionality and compatibility, facilitate interoperability and support consumer safety and public health."
VTS is active in the standardization of several vehicular technologies, sponsoring a range of standards including the following:
- VT/ITS Intelligent Transportation System is a committee chaired by Tom Kurihara that focuses on the coordination, development, and maintaining of standards related to intelligent transportation systems. Examples of topics covered by this committee include (but are not limited to) advanced traffic management systems, advanced vehicle control systems, and advanced public transportation systems.
- VT/LT Land Transportation is a committee chaired by Tom Kurihara that focuses on the coordination, development, and maintaining of standards related to land transportation systems. Examples of topics covered by this committee include (but are not limited to) motor vehicle event data recorders, motor vehicle electronic control devices, and data security.
- VT/RTSC Rail Transportation Standards Committee is a committee chaired by Jon Adams that focuses on the coordination, development, and maintaining of standards related to rail passenger vehicles, trains, and systems. Examples of topics covered by this committee include (but are not limited to) automatic train control, train communications, and electrical power distribution systems.
