The 11th Energetic Macroscopic Representation International Summer School (EMR’18) was jointly organized by Hanoi University of Sciences & Technology (HUST, Vietnam) and University of Lille (ULille, France) from 13–15 June 2018 in Hanoi, Vietnam. EMR’18 was chaired by Ta Cao Minh (HUST) and Alain Bouscayrol (ULille). A preliminary seminar was held in HoChiMinh City (South Vietnam) on 11 June 2018, “Challenges of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles” in order to attract attendees from the entire Vietnam.
Preliminary seminar (HoChiMinh City, Vietnam)
EMR’18 offered 5 lectures on concepts, 14 lectures on applications and 3 simulation sessions to 53 attendees from 5 countries. Attendees chose between a simulation of an electric vehicle, a wind energy conversion system and a photovoltaic conversion system.
Lectures
EMR’18 had the support of IEEE VTS; the French groups MEGEVH, CE2I, L2EP; the Vietnamese group CTI; academic institutions A&M ParisTech and Sherbrooke University, Canada; and an industrial company—EVN, the electricity supplier of Vietnam—as a sponsor.
Simulation sessions
This summer school deals with the EMR, which is a graphical formalism to interconnect models of systems composed of different physical domains. It enables an easy analysis of the global system behavior and a systematic deduction of its control organization.
The applications are various from electric/hybrid vehicles to renewable energy conversions systems, including electrical and electromechanical conversion systems and many different other systems. Developed in 2000 by the control team of L2EP (Lab of Electrical Engineering and Power electronics) of University of Lille, EMR is now taught in more than 9 countries and is more and more used in industry (PSA Peugeot Citroën, Siemens, Valeo, SNCF – French national railway company -, etc.).

The EMR summer school was initiated by Prof. Alain Bouscayrol (L2EP, Univ. Lille) in 2006. Since 2011, the EMR summer school is organized the odd years in Lille (France) and the even years in other countries (Canada, China, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland in the past).
The average attendance is 56.4 attendees per year, from a total of 18 countries. More than 120 different applications had been presented in lectures. Since 2011, credits are delivered to Master and PhD students by University of Lille and/or the partner university.
EMR’19 will take place in Lille (France) in June 2019. Visit the EMR website for more information and photos.
