5G Field Trials
Matthias Pätzold

During the Fourth Global 5G event, LGU+ partnered with Huawei to complete the world’s first large-scale 5G network test in a precommercial environment in the Gangnam District, Seoul. This network consists of both 3.5- and 28-GHz base stations.

The test also helped to successfully verify the technologies of Internet Protocol television (IPTV) 4-K video and to future-proof many other commercial 5G services. In addition, the test validated high-speed mobility, dual connectivity, and intercell handovers (under continuous networking conditions). The test results returned average data rates of 1 Gb/s over the low band and more than 5 Gb/s for dual connectivity over high and low bands.

In a typical dense urban area, successful verification of the 5G end-to-end (E2E) solution indicated Huawei’s gradual maturity in advanced preparation for 5G’s imminent commercial deployment. With a keen focus on enhanced mobile broadband, the companies implemented the 5G precommercial test in a continuous-ring topology based on Huawei E2E 5G devices.

The trial achieved a peak data rate of 20 Gb/s and an average data rate of more than 5 Gb/s through dual connectivity over 3.5 and 28 GHz. These impressive rates were combined with intercell handovers to produce stable results. Elsewhere, a 5G tour bus delivered 5G-based IPTV 4 K, and a VR drone was demonstrated in the 5G for All experience room at the LGU+ headquarters, which required data rates ranging from 20 to 100 Mb/s. For mobile scenarios, a glitch-free superior user experience demonstrated Huawei’s readiness for 5G networks.

Vodafone announced that it achieved the first 5G data connection in Italy. The 5G trials were conducted by Vodafone in partnership with Huawei, which made available a radio base station using massive MIMO technology. Vodafone was selected to conduct 5G trials in the Milan metropolitan area, where the company used frequencies in the 3.7–3.8-GHz domain.

The companies achieved the 5G data connection using an antenna located at the Vodafone Village in Milan, marking the start of the planned network rollout. This trial was a real live test demonstrating the use of 5G prototype equipment that already meets the current 3GPP standard, including massive MIMO technology.

During the test, it was possible to appreciate the performance of the 5G network, which reached download speeds of more than 2.7 Gb/s with a latency of just above a millisecond.
