Message from the VP—Publications:
Serving the VT Community
Weihua Zhuang, IEEE VTS Vice President—Publications

As a popular numeric metric of journal citations, the impact factor is calculated as the number of citations to the journal divided by the number of papers published in the journal over a period of the two most recent years.

In June 2018, the Web of Science published the new InCites Journal Citations Reports, which shows that both TVT and VTM have reached to their highest impact factor in 2017, with 4.432 for TVT (from 4.066 in 2016) and 6.038 for VTM (from 4.429 in 2016).

The following two figures show the impact factor for the two journals in the past five years.

On behalf of the VTS Board of Governors, I would like to congratulate the former TVT Editor-in-Chief (EiC) Dr. Michael Fang and former VTM EiC Dr. Klaus David and to thank their editorial teams for the great achievements!

Figure 2. VTM impact factor trend

There has been a significant increase in TVT paper submissions in recent years. In 2017, we received 2572 submissions, a more than 20 percent increase from the 2119 submissions in 2016. The trend continues in 2018. The current TVT EiC, Dr. Nei Kato, has demonstrated a high level of commitment and skills in leading the editorial board members, handling the large volume of submissions with integrity and efficiency.

An increase in submissions has led to a substantial publication backlog. Thanks to the continued support from the VTS Board of Governors in expanding the publication page budget, the backlog has been improving as shown in Figure 3, and will continue to do so. From January 2019, TVT will become an electronic publication only journal, without printed hard copies. This transition is an effort to expedite the publication of accepted papers.

Dr. Klaus David has just completed his term as VTM EiC. Thanks again, Klaus, for a great job! Dr. Javier Gozalvez became the new EiC as of 1 July. He is a professor at the Universidad Miguel Hernández of Elche in Spain, and has been an active volunteer within the VT community.

Javier served as VTS President during 2016–7 and was the VTM Mobile Radio Senior Editor for many years.  With his strong commitment to VTM leadership, we will see many new initiatives for the journal’s growth and impact.

VTS continues to support new R&D initiatives in autonomous / electric / connected (ACE) vehicles and in 5G communication systems via its publications and conferences. For both TVT and VTM, we have recruited new editorial board members, and have organized special sections/series in the emerging technical areas.

The VT community will continue to see that TVT and VTM are the right place to publish new research findings; on the other hand, the journals provide state-of-the-art literature that will help speed up R&D activities in VT technical areas.

Weihua Zhuang (M’93-SM’01-F’08) has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada, since 1993, where she is a Professor and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Wireless Communication Networks. Her current research focuses on resource allocation and QoS provisioning in wireless networks, and on smart grid. She is a co-recipient of several best paper awards from IEEE conferences. Dr. Zhuang was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (2007–13), VTC2017-Fall Technical Program Chair, and VTC2016-Fall TPC Co-chair. She is an IEEE Fellow, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, an elected member of the VTS Board of Governors, and IEEE VTS VP—Publications.
