Autonomous vehicles are a topic of great
interest across many sectors. News outlets eagerly report on the latest
advances in autonomous vehicle technology.
Lawmakers and policy experts are
working to define new legislation and regulatory frameworks that incorporate
these vehicles on the road. And, high tech companies involved in the development
and implementation of autonomous vehicle systems are testing their platforms extensively
in public spaces.
At the same time, the technical community has
been sufficiently energized to push the envelope of the current
state-of-the-art in autonomous vehicle technology. They are working to make
these systems more reliable, robust, and safer across a wide range of
challenging environmental conditions.
Although it will be some time before autonomous
vehicles can truly deliver on the promise of offering safer alternatives to
human-operated vehicles, I am excited to see this momentum build.
IEEE VTS is a leading organization in supporting
innovation and research in autonomous vehicle technology. As an
applications-driven society, VTS not only provides services that help us seek
out new knowledge and define new theoretical concepts related to autonomous
vehicle technology, but also explores how these concepts, theories, and
knowledge can be employed by applications like autonomous vehicles to solve
difficult technical challenges. Some of our most significant activities
include:
- The IEEE Connected and Automated Vehicle Summit, held in Santa Clara, California, USA, on 8 February 2018, was a spectacular forum that brought together ~200 individuals from industry and academia to learn about the latest developments in connected and autonomous vehicle technology from world-renowned experts. We are planning a follow-up event, if you are interested in participating, please let me know.
- The IEEE Connected and Automated Vehicles Symposium will be held on 27 August 2018 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, together with the 2018 IEEE 88th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2018-Fall). We hope you can join us at this world-class event, which will feature an exciting collection of high-quality peer-reviewed paper presentations.
- For those who would like to learn more about autonomous and connected vehicles, the 3rd IEEE Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Summer School @ WPI will take place in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, 20–21 August 2018. This two-day event will consist of five to six lectures from world-renowned experts on topics such as sensors, connectivity, controls, security, and other technologies critical to autonomous vehicles.
(By the way, this summer school will happen just a few days before VTC2018-Fall and the IEEE Connected and Automated Vehicles Symposium in Chicago.)
The above list is far from exhaustive, as there are many other activities focused on autonomous vehicle technology taking place around the world and within VTS. To provide even more offerings, VTS has recently formed the Ad Hoc Committee on Autonomous Vehicles, with Professor Yue Wang of Clemson University serving as its inaugural chair.
If you have an idea for a new activity related to autonomous vehicles, or would like to volunteer with an existing autonomous vehicles activity, please feel free to contact either Yue or myself.
It is only a matter of time before autonomous
vehicles are deployed extensively on streets and highways around the world. VTS
is here to provide you with a wide range of services and activities to help you
stay ahead of this rapidly emerging technology! |
