On 26 August 2025, IEEE VTS Chicago Chapter Chair Alvin Chin hosted a virtual talk via Zoom, on The Future of Ambulance Detection: Towards Safer Roads and Smarter Travel. The talk was given by Nicolas Corsini, a graduate student in Computer Science at Illinois Institute of Technology, who worked on and led this project.
In urban traffic, detecting an approaching ambulance is often left to the driver’s ability to hear sirens—an unreliable method in noisy, congested environments. For something as critical as clearing the path for emergency vehicles, this is not enough.
This presentation explored how Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication can give drivers early, accurate awareness of approaching ambulances by transmitting real-time location data. The presentation discussed the challenges of reliable communication, vehicle positioning, and how to present this information visually in a way that drivers can act on instinctively.
