Conference Report
IEEE VTC2019-Spring

The VTC2019-Spring conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 28 April – 1 May 2019 was a huge success, with 352 papers presented for the 495 attendees. The conference began on Sunday with four educational tutorials and eight workshops on topics ranging from:

  • Wireless communications and networks
  • Artificial intelligence and deep learning
  • Smart cities
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Drones
  • Swarm intelligence
  • Connected and autonomous vehicles

Proof-of-concept activities coupled with an academic panel rounded out the first day’s program.

The rest of the days were filled with exciting talks, fantastic food, and many opportunities to network. Attendees could mingle with students, professionals from many areas of the technology sector, and professors and other academics from around the world.

Students and those just entering the workforce—there to present their work or to volunteer in support of their local chapter, the Malaysia IEEE Communications & Vehicular Technology Joint Chapter—were encouraged to attend the Young Professionals Pizza Panel. The panel presented their personal stories, and gave the opportunity to pose questions to experts in academia, research, government or private industry.

The Industry Program highlighted:

  • The latest in 5G development within the region
  • Test and measurement issues and challenges
  • Policy and safety with autonomous vehicles
  • Applied IoT in smart applications
  • RF sensing

Expert representatives from Qualcomm, Ericsson, Keysight Technologies, Rohde & Schwartz, BHD Test and Measurements, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission served as panelists.

Wednesday was “Connected World Day” where industry panelists from Aerodyne, MIMOS Berhad, VersaFleet and Axiata Digital discussed artificial intelligence and its impact on the vehicular industry. Leaders from Huawei, Smart Indonesia Initiatives Association and Telekom Malaysia examined Smart Cities from concept to reality.

Two new IEEE Fellows were recognized, Jiming Chen (Zhejiang University, China) and Yi Qian (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA), for their extraordinary records of accomplishment in the field of Vehicular Technology.

The best regular paper was awarded to Andrea Tassi, Loannis Mavromatis, Robert Piechocki, Andrew Nix, Christian Compton, Tracey Poole, and Wolfgang Schuster for their paper titled “Agile Data Offloading over Novel Fog Computing Infrastructure for CAVs.”

The best student paper award was given to Renato Abreu, Thomas Jacobsen, Gilberto Berardinelli, Klaus Pedersen, Nurul H. Mahmood, Istvan Z. Kovacs, and Preben Morgensen for their paper titled “On the Multiplexing of Broadband Traffic and Grant-Free Ultra-Reliable Communication in Uplink.”

Congratulations to all our awardees!
