I would like to share with all of you three recent activities designed to foster community amongst VTS members located in different parts of the world, enabling them to learn, network, and grow.
- The inaugural VTS event, 2018 IEEE Wireless Africa, was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during 24 – 25 September 2018. This event promoted the exchange of new ideas and concepts amongst wireless researchers in Africa, as well as facilitated new opportunities for collaboration. Numerous wireless researchers and practitioners met from across the African continent, brought together by our community volunteers at the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology.
- VTS chapters are at the forefront of our support to our members worldwide. They bring VTS members together, hosting invited speakers, including our VTS Distinguished Lecturers, who present the latest advances in vehicular technology. This year’s VTS Chapter of the Year Award recipient is the VTS Shanghai Chapter, chaired by Professor Wen Chen of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Formed in February 2017, the VTS Shanghai Chapter has already organized two workshops and over 20 invited international speakers!
- Student members are the future of IEEE. With excitement, we report that the student members of the VTS Centro-Norte Brasil Chapter have been extremely active in organizing activities and engaging with other VTS members internationally. They organized an IEEE Day 2018 celebration (for which I had the honor of giving a presentation remotely via Skype) as well as helped to organize this year’s edition of the 3rd Workshop on Communication Networks and Power Systems (WCNPS) during 7 – 9 November 2018.
There are many more activities that I have not had the chance to mention here. Nevertheless, I would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers out there who are organizing VTS activities for our international community. If you have a VTS activity that you would like to share, please feel free to contact me at alexw@ieee.org; I would love to hear from you!
