The 2018 Joint Rail Conference (JRC 2018) will take place 18-20 April 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA. This international conference is the premier technical event in North America including all discipline for freight and passenger rail transportation; mechanical, electrical, civil, and systems engineering, as well as rail safety, planning, design, manufacturing, financing, operations, and management.
Papers and presentations are on all aspects of railroad civil, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering, as well as rail safety, planning, design, financing, operations, and management. Conference program will include the following tracks.
- Track 1: Railroad Infrastructure Engineering
- Track 2: Rail Equipment Engineering
- Track 3: Signal and Train Control Engineering
- Track 4: Service Quality and Operations Research
- Track 5: Planning and Development
- Track 6: Safety and Security
- Track 7: Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
- Track 8: Urban Passenger Rail Transport
- Track 9: Electrification
- Track 10: Vehicle Track Interaction
JRC 2018 will feature distinguished keynote speakers from the American Public Transportation Association as well as the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to the more than 145 peer reviewed academic papers, the conference includes two seminars.
One seminar concentrates on Positive Train Control implementation of a Hosted Server application for reginal railroads and transit agencies while the other looks at Big Data on railroads and the process of utilizing this information on predictive maintenance.
A workshop is also offered for those interested in simulation of train operation using the same information used in Positive Train Control for the track database. It offers a unique opportunity to fully understand the simulation environment and its effect on train operation.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit specific sites relative to rail and transit systems in the greater Pittsburgh area. One trip visits the Monongahela Incline, a funicular built by John Endres in 1870. It is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the United States, and is a registered historic engineering landmark by the American Association of Mechanical Engineers.
Another tour takes attendees to the McConway and Torley manufacturing plant to see heavy components being assembled for use on freight cars by North American railroads.
