All VTS members have
access to a wide variety of resources that can help their professional
formation and advancement, such as participation in VTS chapters worldwide,
access to our excellent Distinguished Lecturer program, involvement in the
organization of VTS-sponsored events such as the VTC and VPPC conference
series, access to the VTS Resource Center, and many IEEE-wide resources.
In
addition, both VTS and IEEE offer several resources and activities designed
specifically for women.
Across IEEE, the Women in Engineering (WIE) organization seeks to support all female members. Although membership is not
limited to women (I am a member of WIE), all of its services, activities, and
resources are tailored to the professional needs of women.
WIE provides an array
of services including its own newsletter and an excellent semi-annual
publication, IEEE Women in Engineering, as well as numerous awards,
scholarships, and grants for women (some up to $10,000), and support for women
seeking to advance their membership grades. WIE also offers many volunteer
opportunities, including organizing affiliation groups and liaising with IEEE
societies. Our VTS-WIE liaison is Carmela Cozzo.
Two
IEEE WIE activities of note are the IEEE Women in Engineering International
Leadership Conference (WIE ILC)
and the IEEE WIE International Leadership Summits. The WIE ILC events provide
opportunities for women who are mid-level and senior technical professionals to
learn how they can grow with respect to leadership, innovation, technology, and
entrepreneurship.
The
WIE International Leadership Summits focus on providing networking
opportunities for women to help facilitate the exchange of ideas, experiences,
and information, as well as enable significant levels of mentorship between the
current generation and next generation of leaders in academia and industry.
With respect to women
members of VTS, we are in the process of creating several services and resources
designed to foster a greater sense of community and support the professional
development of women. Many of these activities are still in the initial
planning stages, and we are seeking your support to help realize them.
If you are interested
in volunteering your time to help enable a stronger and more vibrant community
of women within the VTS, please contact Carmela Cozzo or me. Thank you very much for your
support in this important community within VTS! |
