VTS Elections 2017: Results
James Irvine, VTS Secretary

Two separate elections are held each year in VTS. The first involves the entire membership and elects 5 of the 15 voting members of the Board of Governors of the Society, its administrative committee. All the successful candidates in this year’s election have previously served on the Board in come capacity before. They are

  • Javier Gozálvez, from Universidad Miguel Hernandez de Elche in Spain, serving as VTS President
  • Lajos Hanzo, from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, currently an elected Board member
  • James Irvine, from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, also from the United Kingdom, serving as VTS Secretary
  • Alexander Wyglinski, from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the United States, serving as VTS Executive Vice President
  • Weihua Zhuang, from the University of Waterloo in Canada, serving as VTS VP—Mobile Radio

Voting board members are elected in rotation, and serve for three years. The class of 2017 will serve as voting members for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The second election took place at the Board of Governor’s meeting at VTC2017-Fall in Toronto and was for the executive officers for 2018. The successful candidates are:

  • President: Alex Wyglinski
  • Executive Vice President: Abbas Jamalipour
  • VP—Publications: Weihua Zhuang
  • VP—Conferences: JR Cruz
  • VP—Membership: Richard Yu
  • VP—Land Transportation: David Thurston
  • VP—Motor Vehicles: Loïc Boulon
  • VP—Mobile Radio: Jae Hong Lee
  • Treasurer: Nicholas Kirsch

The vote means that the Vice Presidents for Publications, Conferences, Motor Vehicles and Mobile Radio remain unchanged from 2017. Alex Wyglinski moves from Executive VP to President, replacing Javier Gozálvez from 1 January.

Abbas Jamalipour, David Thurston and Nicholas Kirsch join the Executive for next year. David Thurston, who replaces Bih-Yuan Ku as VP for Land Transportation, has held that position in the past; and David is co-chair of the Joint Rail Conference next year. Abbas, who replaces Alex Wyglinski as Executive VP, has been an elected member of the Board since 2014 and as well as being Editor of the VTS Mobile World is Chair of the Fellows Committee. Richard replaces Sensors Council president-elect Fabrice Labeau as VP Membership, has been an elected member of the Board in 2017.

Nicholas Kirsch was appointed to the Board last year and as Fellowship Committee Chair is responsible reviving the two scholarships run by the Society—the Daniel E. Noble Fellowship and the Transportation Fellowship. Nicholas takes over from Tom Rubinstein, who has been treasurer of VTS for 6 years.
