The IEEE Malaysia ComVT Joint Chapter organized the IEEE VTS ASEAN Summer School, which was held in conjunction with ATOM Project Workshop on 2–3 May 2019 at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Malaysia.
The Summer School is a special project by IEEE VTS to increase the number of VTS members in the region, as well as to create a platform for the members to interact and exchange ideas, especially on research topics in vehicular technology.
The event was held after the final day of IEEE VTC2019-Spring in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme was Recent Advances in Wireless Communications and Vehicular Technology. Twenty-nine postgraduate students from UPM, UTM, UM, UKM were in attendance, and held a thought-provoking discussion with presenters and other participants.
Two Distinguished Lectures were given at the Summer School. The first presented was Joint User and Signal Detection of Linear Complexity for Uplink by Professor Wen Chen, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. The second was entitled Nonlinear Effects in Digital Communications – Turning Performance Degradation in Gains by Professor Rui Dinis, New University of Lisbon (NOVA).
In the afternoon, there were talks by local renowned speakers: Sense 'Vehicle' Sense by Professor Raja Syamsul Azmir (UPM); Spectrum Sensing in VANET using Reinforcement Learning by AP Dr. Rafidah Md Noor (UM); and Rateless Codes for Vehicular Communications by Dr. Fadzillah Abdullah (UKM).
On the second day, participants had a sharing session in the morning and a technical visit to Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), Rawang, Selangor. Demonstrations on how automotive, robotics and IoT is used in vehicular technology were presented.
As a result of this program, a number of students registered as VTS members, and showed interest in volunteering with the Society. More importantly, the activities had shown them how to intensify their efforts both in conducting research and expanding their networking opportunities.
