The 2nd IEEE Wireless Africa Conference (WAC) was held in the beautiful city of Pretoria, South Africa on 19 – 20 August 2019. WAC 2019 took place at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa campus and facilities, and enjoyed wonderful support from the local team.
The second major IEEE VTS event held in South Africa, it proved to be a great success. The organizing committee included IEEE VTS South Africa Chapter officers. This chapter is the first IEEE VTS chapter in sub-Saharan Africa.

The conference welcomed ~60 registered participants and had a very interesting mix of paper presentations, keynotes and industry speakers. Attendees from industry, academics, researchers and graduate students used this opportunity to share, network and spread knowledge about their work and the latest trends and developments in wireless technology and 4IR.
There were 45 papers received in total, and after the peer-review process, 31 papers were accepted and finally 29 papers were presented at IEEE WAC 2019. The submitted papers were mainly from Africa, Denmark and Sweden.
The accepted papers focused on:
- Antenna Systems and mmWave Communications
- Signal Transmission, Reception, and Communication Theory
- Dynamic Spectrum Management, Cognitive Radio, and Spectrum Sensing
- Wireless/Radio Access Technologies,
- IoT
- Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks
The VTS Board of Governors was represented by Senior Past President Javier Gozalvez and Vice-President—Mobile Radio Jae Hong Lee. They both delivered keynote speeches, along with Sumit Roy from University of Washington, USA, and Tommie Chambers from Siemens.
At the IEEE WAC 2019 gala dinner, six best paper awards were awarded. These papers are from such institutions as University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of the Witwatersrand, University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
On Day 2, Sentech Ltd. sponsored an Industry Forum on the topic Towards 4IR with 5G and IoT, and included 5 panelists from OEMs Huawei and Nokia, as well as other wireless business entrepreneurs.
