On 19 November 2018, Sound Transit of Tacoma, Washington, announced it had begun construction of the 2.4- mi Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension, which expands the current rail line from the Theater District in downtown Tacoma to the Stadium District and Hilltop neighborhoods.
The project includes relocating the Theater District station and building six new stations along the expanded line. Service on the new extension is scheduled to begin in 2022.
A future voter-approved expansion of Tacoma Link will extend it to Tacoma Community College by 2039. Sound Transit selected Walsh Construction Company II to build the extension and new platform stations.
The US$217 million project expands the existing Tacoma Link rail lineup to Stadium Way, First Street, Division Avenue, and down Martin Luther King Jr. Way to South 19th Street.
The project is funded through a partnership between Sound Transit, the City of Tacoma, and a US$75 million federal Small Starts grant; with support from U.S. Senator Patty Murray, the project also received a US$15 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant.
