At the beginning of 2018, the VTS BoG approved the creation of the Ad Hoc Committee on Autonomous Vehicles (AVs). This committee is responsible for developing a community within the VTS interested in the design, implementation, and deployment of autonomous ground vehicles.
Because of the complexity and safety-critical nature of autonomous driving, standardization represents one of the main priorities of this recently-formed committee. Our aim is to support the development of technical standards that address interoperability, functionality and safety aspects of AVs, while being capable of fulfilling the needs of industry, regulators, users, etc.
Some of the targeted standardization areas include (but are not limited to):
- Data format for information exchange between AVs
- Security and privacy
- Validation, testing and certification of AVs, covering experimental and virtual validation
- Reliability, functional safety, fail safe and emergency operation of AVs
- Perception of the vehicle’s external environment
- Human machine interface and human factors
- Ethical aspects
These standardization activities will be performed in cooperation with the VTS Standards group and IEEE Standards Association. We would like to invite the VTS community to actively engage with us in the development of these technical standards for autonomous driving. If you have interest in this area please get in contact with us. |
