Dr. James Irvine is a Reader in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, where he leads the Mobile Communications Group, as well as the Communications Theme of the Power Networks Demonstration Centre.
He currently heads the Industry IoT workpackage of the 5GRuralFirst testbed, a collaboration of more than 30 partners, led by Cisco and the University of Strathclyde, to ensure that the benefits of 5G also accrue to the population who live outside cities.
His research interests include security and resource management in wireless systems, and he is Co-director of the first Masters course in the UK focused on 5G communications. He obtained his BEng and PhD from Strathclyde University in 1989 and 1994, and has worked in the Mobile Communications Group since 1994.
He ran his own company, Modular Controls, from 1989 until its sale in 1997. In addition to over 200 research papers, he is a co-author of two text books, and co-authored 7 patents.
James is a very active IEEE volunteer. He joined VTS in 1996, and in 1999 took over as editor of the VTS News. In 2006 he successful led efforts to turn the publication into a magazine, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, for which he was Editor-in-Chief until 2008.
Although also very interested in conferences—he has been a member of the VTS Conference Committee since 2003, and General Co-chair of VTC2015-Spring in Glasgow—his main passion has been printed publications. So, after standing down as EiC of IEEE VTM, he continued to serve on the Publications Committee, first as VP—Publications, and now as member responsible for conference publications. James was President of VTS for 2008 and 2009, and is now VTS Secretary.
In addition, over the past ten years, he has been involved in a number of IEEE committees:
- TAB (Technical Activities Board)
- PSPB (Publication Services and Products Board)
- EAB (Educational Activities Board)
- TAB/PSPB Products and Services Committee
- Conference Committee
- Conference Publications Committee
- Future Directions Committee
- Standards Education Committee
James currently is Chair of the Standards Education Committee. He also serves as VTS representative to the 5G and Blockchain initiative, and is a co-chair of working groups on both committees.
A native of Scotland, James has never lived far from the Ayrshire town he grew up in, which is surrounded by golf courses. However, between teaching, research and IEEE activities, time on the golf course itself has unfortunately been rather limited of late! |
