The mission of Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is to support the professional development and growth of our approximately 4600 members worldwide through a range of activities that enable us to learn, network, and collaborate.
Given the breadth of technologies covered by VTS, there are numerous communities that specialize in topics such as mobile radio, land transportation, motor vehicles, electromagnetic propagation, and land mobile radio. These technical communities provide many opportunities for members who are interested in specific topics and technologies to come together and exchange ideas, and make advances that help redefine the state of the art, from speaker series to summer schools and special journal issues.
In response to our rapidly changing technological landscape, VTS actively supports the growth of new technical communities that can provide members with the latest knowledge and opportunities, in order to keep up with new and emerging areas. At the latest VTS Board of Governors meeting in Santa Clara, California (10 February 2018), three new ad hoc committees were approved:
- The Ad Hoc Committee on Electric Railway Systems focuses on technologies and systems related to high speed rail, urban transit, heavy haul freight, metro, fixed guideway transit, and electric railway systems, including the components and systems used in both automated and non-automated systems. The chair and vice-chair of this committee are Mr. Feng Jianghua and Professor Pable Arboleya.
- The Ad Hoc Committee on Drones covers technologies related to the communications needed to enable reliable navigation and safety of drones. The chair of this committee is Professor Kamesh Namuduri.
- The Ad Hoc Committee on Autonomous Vehicles covers technologies related to the design, implementation, and deployment of autonomous ground vehicles. The chair of this committee is Professor Yue Wang.
Since their formation, these committees have been working hard to grow their respective technical communities. They have organized panels, workshops, and sessions at established conferences, and have created new conferences and symposia. Furthermore, several journal/magazine special issues are in the planning stages.
It will be very exciting to watch as these communities grow, aiding our efforts to support the professional development of VTS members worldwide. If you are interested in any of these new committees or would like to volunteer to help build them up, please feel free to reach out to the committee chairs! |
