The 2018 JRC (Joint Rail Conference) took place 18-20 April 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA. This international conference is the premier technical event in North America for:
- Freight and passenger rail transportation
- Mechanical, electrical, civil, and systems engineering
- Rail safety
- Planning, design, and manufacturing
- Financing, operations, and management
This year, the JRC banquet was held at PNC Park, home of professional baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates.
This view of downtown Pittsburgh was taken from the tour of the facilities press box. City of bridges indeed!
It has been another exciting year within the Land Transportation Division, and we have had several interesting developments.
With 138 peer reviewed papers and presentations from five continents and 14 countries, the reach and interest of the conference has once again exceeded our expectations.
As an IEEE Lead year, I had the privilege of chairing the conference. The IEEE percentage of papers again rose to a new level, offering significant increases to the field. We were proud to have Paul Skoutelas, President and CEO of the American Public Transportation Association, as the keynote speaker.
2019 JRC will be held in Snowbird, Utah, which is near the site of the Golden Spike, the ceremonial final spike that joined the rails of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads for the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States. It will be the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Spike, and you can bet that it will feature in our conference activities.
Speaking of anniversaries, the following year 2020 JRC will be held in St. Louis, Missouri. This is where it all started for JRC in 1920, making this the 100th time we have held this railway conference. Come join us for the celebration!
