VTS Features at IEEE Sections Congress 2017 in Sydney
Javier Gozálvez, VTS President

VTS participated in IEEE Sections Congress this past August in Sydney. IEEE Sections Congress is the triennial gathering of Section leadership and delegates from all ten IEEE Regions. The event is an opportunity for delegates to learn how to utilize the resources of IEEE to maximize their effectiveness as IEEE volunteer leaders.

Some of the giveaways on the stand—the car-shaped stress relievers
proved especially popular.

This 2017 edition was the largest ever, with 1250 attendees from 165 countries. As such, it was the perfect forum for VTS to promote the many benefits it has to offer members and Sections. VTS took part as an exhibitor, and hundreds of colleagues visited to learn about membership benefits, Distinguished Lecturers, Summer Schools, the Motor Vehicles Challenge, and other new and established VTS ventures.

The VTS stand got a lot of traffic.

We took this great opportunity to meet and partner with Section leaders, in person, to help create new chapters in Sections not currently under VTS’ purview. This is very important as benefits such as Distinguished Lectures and co-sponsorship of Summer/Winter Schools require the presence of a chapter in that Section.

And last but not least, we got the chance to meet the many VTS members that came to the Sydney event. VTS was very involved in this Sections Congress: in addition to our very successful booth, we had Ignite presentations on VTS activities: self-driving vehicles, and the EPICS program; and presentations about our outstanding Distinguished Lecturer program.

We thank the dedicated volunteers that worked to put VTS in the spotlight at IEEE Sections Congress, and the many colleagues that visited us and expressed interest in developing more activities within VTS, and in bringing VTS to new Sections. Many thanks to you all!
