The convergence of terrestrial, aerial, and satellite communication infrastructures ensures this continuity by shaping a 3D ITS ecosystem, where unmanned aerial and ground vehicles operate within a unified communication fabric and cooperative intelligence extends beyond traditional road networks. Concretely, at MWC 2026, Viasat and Cubic demonstrated what is described as the first live satellite voice call for connected vehicles over a 3GPP-compliant non-terrestrial network. This, combined with a single-SIM solution that seamlessly switches between terrestrial and satellite connectivity, anticipates a future of truly ubiquitous coverage, supporting safety-critical services.
Remarkably, this demonstration was not about connectivity as a feature, rather about eliminating disconnection as a possibility. In a cooperative system, losing the network means losing awareness. This matters more than it appears.
In other words, cooperative systems fail not when intelligence is insufficient, but when connectivity becomes intermittent.
