Connected and Automated Vehicles
The Rise of Cooperative Intelligence
Antonella Molinaro

For over a decade, the dominant paradigm has been autonomous driving, where each vehicle perceives, decides, and acts independently. However, demonstrations at Mobile World Congress 2026 challenged this assumption, suggesting that autonomy alone is insufficient for scalability, safety, and robustness in real-world environments, and marking a decisive transition in the evolution of mobility. Connectivity is no longer a convenience: It is the enabling substrate of large-scale cooperative systems.

Across demonstrations and industry announcements, a clear pattern emerged: Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is moving beyond its traditional role in safety messaging and traffic efficiency, becoming instead a platform for real-time data exchange and distributed perception.
