The IEEE VTS North Chapter has been a main local supporter and sponsor of the annual IEEE New Zealand Wireless Workshop since 2018. Several IEEE VTS New Zealand North Chapter professional and graduate members attended and presented at the 2018 and 2019 workshops in Auckland and Hamilton, respectively.
Since 2019, Dr. Sheikh Izzal Azid (University of The South Pacific, Fiji) has come on board to help with promoting IEEE VTS to Pacific island countries including Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.
On 25 March 2020, New Zealand was placed under nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19. Everything changed quickly but one great thing that kept all of us going is our country’s broadband Internet infrastructure and the widespread use of information and communications technologies (ICT). They have kept us all connected even though we are physically isolated. Our professional and graduate members from two Universities in the Auckland region—University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology—are able to stay productive, creative, and collaborative in getting things done.
In May 2020, our chapter was honored to have IEEE New Zealand North Section Vice-chair Peter Over and Treasurer / Secretary Tek Tjing Lie provide a webinar sharing their experiences and tips on working from home during this challenging period. The webinar had covered the topics on behavior changes, communicating and collaborating, keeping focus and looking after one’s physical and mental wellbeing.
Together with our sibling chapter—IEEE VTS New South Wales, chaired by Wei Ni in Australia—we successfully delivered two webinars in May 2020:
“Blockchain Meet Deep Learning” by Yifei Wei from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China
“IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology and IEEE Press” by IEEE OJVT Editor-in-Chief Sumei Sun (Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore) and IEEE Press VTS Liaison Peter Han Joo Chong (Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand)
Two additional webinars were released for our Chapter:
“Edge Intelligence for Internet of Things” by Yan Zhang (University of Oslo, Norway)
“On Beamforming and Bumblebees: Connecting Vehicles Together” by Alexander M. Wyglinski (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA)
On 1 September, our chapter hosted a new webinar: “The State of Art, Challenges and Opportunities for the Deeply Integrated Visible Light Communications System” by Jian Song (Tsinghua University, China).
Currently, we are planning and preparing our first nationwide IEEE New Zealand Vehicular Technology Workshop to be held on 29 October 2020 at Auckland, with the theme “Connected and Autonomous Vehicles meet Sustainable Development Goals”. It will be free of charge to all IEEE VTS members around the world. We will release the workshop program and virtual meeting access details at the beginning of September.
