Recent Activities in VTS Standards
Tom Kurihara, IEEE VTS Standards Committee Chair

The VTS standards program continues to be active despite the current travel and meeting restrictions imposed by governments around the world.

The VTS Standards Committee and its Working Groups are creating new opportunities for VTS member participation.

Meetings have been conducted under the recent safety guidelines: social distancing, frequent hand-washing, and the wearing of facial covering.

Going forward, meetings will be conducted using telecommunication facilities, and will do so until further notice.

Two new projects were approved and assigned to the IEEE Vehicular Transport/Intelligent Transport Systems (VT/ITS) 1609 Working Group (WG):

  • P1609.13™, Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments - Reliable Data Transport Mechanisms for Multiple Receivers
  • P1609.20™, Recommended practice for Extending the Functionality of IEEE Std 1609.2 (secure message formats and processing for use by Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) devices)

Standards scheduled for revision to consolidate amendments into the base document, incorporating guidance notes, accommodating communication technologies in addition to Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), and corrections in the IEEE VT/ITS 1609 WG for the following:

  • P1609.3™REV, Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE)—Networking Services
  • P1609.2™REV, Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE)--Security Services for Application and Management Messages

The completed draft for P1609.2.1™, Draft Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) - Certificate Management Interfaces for End Entities, is pending approval at the next meeting of the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board. This significant accomplishment has gained interest of other standards groups, including SAE, International; ISO TC204, ITS; ETSI TC-ITS; and other national standards organizations.

Effective two-way liaising is being maintained by members of the IEEE 1609 WG with national and international standards groups on proposed regulation changes in the allocation of spectrum for vehicular and vulnerable road users.

The next teleconference of the IEEE 1609 WG is scheduled for 23 – 24 June 2020. Meetings are open to all those who have an interest. If you are interested in participating and making contributions, contact WG Chair Justin McNew.

The Automated Vehicle Standards Committee (AVSC) seeks use cases and proposed projects for standards development. If you have any proposals or ideas for projects, contact VTS Ad Hoc Committee on Autonomous Vehicles Chair Ricardo de Castro.

New areas of standardization are actively being explored including sensing devices, high-speed and maglev trains, and large-volume data distribution technologies. Contact Tom Kurihara for more information about the VTS Standards program and new opportunities.
