IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Challenge 2020
Energy management of a fuel cell/ultracapacitor/ battery HEV

IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, the Universidad Industrial de Santander, the University of Burgundy Franche-Comte, the University of Quebec at Trois Rivières and the Universidad Nacional de Rafaela are proud to launch the IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Challenge 2020.

Since 2016, VTS has sponsored an international challenge devoted to the Energy Management Strategy (EMS) of different hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). More than 300 participants from all over the world have sent solutions to the three past competitions, centered on a fuel cell hybrid vehicle, a range extender vehicle and a dual-mode hybrid locomotive, respectively.

The fourth IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Challenge is focused on a heavy-duty hybrid electric vehicle called ECCE. The ECCE VEH is powered by a 30kW PEM fuel cell, 540 V 16 F ultracapacitors and a 540V battery pack.

The objective of this challenge is to propose an Energy Management Strategy (EMS) to reduce hydrogen consumption and increase the lifetimes of the energy sources. The ECCE HEV model and its control are provided to the participants using MATLAB-Simulink software.

Three power profiles are provided to evaluate the EMS. However, the solutions will be scored using a fourth secret profile.

The participants will be invited to present their solutions in a special session devoted to the challenge during IEEE VPPC 2020 in Gijón, Spain. The best solutions will receive an award during the conference and a prize to cover participation expenses.

For more information, visit the IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Challenge 2020 website.
