IEEE VTC2019-Fall
Gordon Stüber, General Co-chair

VTC2019-Fall at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, 22–25 September 2019 was a resounding success with 652 paid registrations and nearly 800 total attendees. The conference drew 807 technical paper submissions, of which 376 technical papers were accepted for presentation in 72 oral sessions and 7 interactive sessions. The Hawaiian atmosphere was excellent, and there were many opportunities to mingle, talk to old friends, and meet new people.

The conference began on Sunday with eight educational tutorials and nine workshops on cutting edge topics, including our first-ever Diversity Workshop that was supported by travel grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation. The welcome reception was held on Sunday evening in the open air Mohala Gardens.

The opening ceremony on Monday was followed by keynotes from Professor Simon Haykin from McMaster University, who enlightened us on the principles and applications of predictive adaptation, and Dr. Edward Tiedemann, Jr. from Qualcomm who spoke of the status and future directions of V2X communications.

Following the keynotes were three industry panels on 5G:

  • Topics in 5G Technology and Standards organized by Amitabha Ghosh (Nokia)
  • Challenges and Technologies for Building the 5G Network Edge organized by Alan Gatherer (Futurewei Technologies)
  • Conquering New Application Frontiers with 5G organized by K. Kiran Mukkavilli (Qualcomm Research)

The day was rounded out with an evening panel on UAV to UAV Communications.

Dr. Reinaldo Valenzuela (Nokia Bell Labs) launched Tuesday’s keynotes with an update on the realities of mm-wave 5G deployment, followed by Dr. Gaurav Bansal with a talk on the status of connected and automated vehicles. Also that day were three industry panels dealing with machine learning:

  • An Intelligent 5G Network for a Variety of Services organized by Jin Yang, Verizon Communications
  • Artificial Intelligence Paradigms for Designing Wireless Systems organized by Haris Gačanin, Nokia
  • AI for Self-Driving Networks organized by David Soldani, Huawei Australia
