VTS Chapter Profile: IEEE VTS Shanghai Chapter

The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Shanghai Chapter was formed on 27 February 2017. This chapter aims to support the fast-growing interests in Internet of Vehicle, Internet of Industry, Internet of Things, high mobility wireless Communications and mobile Communications in Shanghai area. The VTS Chapter office is located in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The chapter had its inaugural meeting at Fudan University on 15 April 2017, organized by Prof. Xin Wang. Among the activities, we had our first workshop with 20 attendees from more than ten universities in Shanghai.


During its first year of operation, the chapter organized technical activities in the form of Workshops, VTS distinguished lectures and invited speakers. These interactive events facilitated connections and collaborations among VTS members and beyond. The technical activities included: 

  • 15 August 2017: Distinguished Lecturer Prof. Yan Zhang (Oslo University, Norway) visited the IEEE VTS Shanghai Chapter as a, and gave a talk on “Mobile Edge Computing in Internet of Things”
  • 16 August 2017: IEEE Fellow and Distinguished Lecturer Prof. Arumugam Nallanatham (King’s College London, UK) visited IEEE VTS Shanghai Chapter, and gave a talk on the Internet of Bio-Nano Things, attracting students and faculty from many institutions
  • 21 August 2017: Prof. Julian Cheng, President of Canadian Information Theory Society (University of British Columbia, Canada) visited and gave a talk on “Developing New Asymptotic Techniques for Correlated Fading Channels”. His talk was attended remotely by Feifei Gao’s group at Tsinghua University and Kai Niu’s group at BUPT
  • 7 September 2017: Prof. Nan Yang (Australian National University), an excellent young researcher from the IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Board, gave a talk on “Safeguarding Future Wireless World with Physical Layer Security”. Four faculty members and seven students attended the seminar
  • 10 October 2017: IEEE Fellow and former IEEE ComSoc Board of Governors Member Prof. Nirwan Ansari (New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA) gave a talk on “On Provisioning Broadband Access”
  • 24 October 2017: National Excellence of Access Network Director Prof. Babak H. Khalaj (Sharif University of Technology, Iran) gave a talk on “Multi-terminal Coded Caching and Network Function Virtualization”
  • 27 October 2017: Dr. Yanru Zhang (Chinese University of Hong Kong) gave talk on “Contract Theory for Wireless Networks”
  • 14 December 2017: Father of network coding and IEEE Fellow Prof. Bob Li (Chinese University of Hong Kong) gave a presentation on “Specious Probability”. More than 100 people attended the seminar.

The VTS Shanghai Chapter had its 2017 annual meeting at Tongji University. A workshop with 40 attendees and 14 speakers was organized by Prof. Jun Wu on 16 December 2017.

On 2 June 2018, the chapter held its spring workshop with 40 attendees and 10 speakers, organized by Prof. Zhou Su and Prof. Shunqing Zhang at Shanghai University. The chapter discussed future plans, including the feasibility of holding joint activities with the Nanjing Chapter, and the possibility of submitting a proposal to host VTC in Shanghai.
