Happy New Year! Welcome to the first standards
report of VTS Mobile World in 2017. In last
year’s reports, I shared with you the latest progress in Wi-Fi related
standards pertaining to our community’s interests. In particular, there is growing
attention to the coexistence of Wi-Fi and 3GPP, as a result of the introduction
of LTE-LAA and LTE-U, and mounting interest in using Wi-Fi as a means of
offloading data from cellular networks.
In this calendar year, I would expect to report on
further progress in 3GPP, especially:
- The study item that investigates the requirements
for a new railway communication system as a successor to the GSM-R service
- The work item on cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) that
provide enhancements specifically for vehicular communications, including
vehicle-to-vehicle communication, vehicle-to-pedestrian communication,
vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, and cellular communication with
networks
- Progress on the study of the 5G new radio (NR), which
includes target use cases, frequency bands of operation, and technologies that
support both standalone and non-standalone NR operations
Last but not least, I would like to enlist the help of the
community-at-large. What standards-related
subjects might you want to learn from this column? Are you interested in
contributing materials that will introduce our readership to exciting new areas
being discussed or adopted in standards for mutual exploration? I look forward
to hearing from you. Please send me your
thoughts at edward.ks.au@gmail.com.
