IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC2017)
Daniel Hissel, General Chair

After the great success of IEEE VPPC2016 held in Hangzhou, China, the 14th IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC2017) will be held in the classically French and beautiful millenary city of Belfort, France, from 11-14 December, 2017. The conference will be organized by Univ. Bourgogne Franche-Comte, UFC & UTBM local universities, FEMTO-ST (CNRS) institute, FCLAB (CNRS) research federation, MEGEVH network (French network on hybrid vehicles) and competitiveness cluster “Future Vehicle” (cluster on new technologies for future vehicles), with general chair Prof. Daniel Hissel from Univ. Bourgogne Franche-Comte.

Belfort, the conference site, has enjoyed a prosperous history since Gallo-Roman times. Belfort’s strategic location—in a natural gap between the Vosges and Jura mountains, on a route linking the Rhine and the Rhone—attracted human settlement, and made it a target for armies. It is the home of the Lion of Belfort, a giant sculpture that expressed the people’s resistance against the siege in the Franco-Prussian war (1870).

Belfort is also a place of heavy industry, mostly dedicated to railway and turbines. The hometown of ALSTOM Company, the first TGVs (high speed trains) were produced here. Moreover, Belfort is also a center of excellence for the manufacturing of gas turbines, hosting the GE Energy European headquarters.

In the suburbs of Belfort, Sochaux is the setting for the story of the Peugeot Car Company, started more than a century ago. More recently, in 1999, the largest French research center on fuel cell systems was launched in Belfort. For people wanting to exchange ideas about the latest developments of electrical, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, the advances of the technology, and also to glimpse French culture and history, Belfort is the perfect location!

VPPC2017 aims to provide a forum for sharing knowledge, experience and creative ideas in vehicle power and propulsion. It will include keynote papers by authoritative speakers, technical sessions, tutorial sessions, poster sessions, special and invited sessions, and exhibitions. Technical papers, tutorials and industry participation are all welcome. Proposals of special sessions are also gratefully solicited.

Topics of the regular tracks will include:

  • Energy Storage and Generation, Components and Systems
  • Power Electronics, Motor Drives and Electric Power Systems
  • Vehicular Electronics and Intelligent Transportation Systems
  • Control and Energy Management of Transportation Systems
  • Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Transportation Systems
  • Charging Systems and Infrastructures
  • Hydrogen refueling infrastructures and fuel cell vehicles

All presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings and submitted to IEEE Xplore and EI Compendex. With the addition of at least 50% new material, extended papers may be submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology.

Moreover, VPPC 2017 will be organized in a carbon care philosophy by trying to reduce the event’s ecological footprint. CO2 emissions associated with the travel of attendees will be calculated and compensated by funding carbon reduction projects.

The Atria Novotel Congress Center in the heart of the old city of Belfort will host the conference. Access to Belfort and to the Congress Center is very easy with direct high-speed trains from Paris, or by plane from the Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Swiss-French-German international airport (35-minute drive to the venue).

High-quality social events will be organized during and after the conference, providing opportunities to meet new colleagues and make new friends. A welcome party will be organized at the Belfort citadel, a unique example of Vauban pentagonal fortifications. The gala dinner will be held in the prestigious Peugeot museum, exclusively for VPPC2017 guests.

In addition, as the conference will be held in December, free coaches to Montbeliard’s fantastic Christmas market and Le Corbusier UNESCO world heritage site will be available for attendees. Post-conference activities include tours of ALSTOM and Peugeot.

We will strive to make VPPC2017 a memorable event and a unique experience for each guest. We look forward to seeing you in Belfort!
