Standards Report
Edward Au

IEEE 802.11 is a working group operating under the sponsor, IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC).  It is responsible for writing standards where the scope of work focuses on Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Its typical transmission range is up to 100 meters.  Unlicensed spectrum is generally considered, including 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 60 GHz, with a few exceptions such as lightly licensed spectrum being considered in IEEE 802.11y and the TV whitespace being considered in IEEE 802.11af.

In the Standards column that appeared in the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, June 2016 issue, I shared with you a few interesting and exciting projects, including IEEE 802.11ah, which operates below 1 GHz band and targets Internet of Things (IoT) applications; IEEE 802.11ax, which represents the next generation of Wi-Fi technology evolution with emphasis on high density scenarios of access points and stations in both indoor and outdoor deployments; and IEEE 802.11ay, which is considered an extension of IEEE 802.11ad, and aims to improve the maximum data rate to 20 Gbps.

In my second Standards column, set to appear in the September 2016 issue, I will give a very high-level overview of the structure of IEEE 802.11 and its current activities. In particular, I describe the latest progress on IEEE 802.11mc and IEEE 802.11ai, two active task groups whose amendments are expected to be published in near future.

Lastly, as mentioned in my first VTSMobileWorld column (February 2016), I would like to enlist the help of the community at large. What standards-related subjects interest you most? What interesting new areas of standards, in which you may be involved, should we introduce to our fellow VTS members? Have you participated in standards development? Would you like to get feedback from your colleagues on a standard you’re currently working on?  I have great faith in the intelligence, creativity, and ingenuity of the VTS membership, and I do hope that you will share your thoughts and ideas with me. I look forward to hearing from you!
