IEEE VTS held its first Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) in
Nanjing, China this spring. The conference was followed by a series of
visits to key universities and institutions in Nanjing, Beijing and
Shanghai. The visits provided an excellent opportunity to introduce VTS to
colleagues and young researchers in China, network with members, and
receive feedback from attendees about VTS and IEEE as a whole.
IEEE VTS Vice President—Membership Fabrice Labeau, Chapters
Committee Chair Pawel Dmochowski, and Board Member and Distinguished
Lecturer Lajos Hanzo teamed up to tour universities in the Nanjing area
from 16 to 19 May: Nanjing University of Information & Science
Technology, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecoms, Nanjing University
of Science and Technology, and Southeast University. The group delivered
presentations on IEEE and VTS, as well as on publishing in IEEE
journals, and engaged in scientific exchanges during technical
presentations about networks of the future.
IEEE VTS President Javier Gozálvez, went to Peking University
(19 May) and Beijing Jiaotong University (20 May). His presentations
consisted of an overview of IEEE and VTS, advice on how to publish in
IEEE publications, and technical seminars on vehicular networks. With
VTS having recently relaunched the Beijing chapter, he also took part in
discussing areas and activities of interest to the chapter. The meeting
at Beijing Jiaotong University included a tour of the State Key Lab of
Rail Traffic Control and Safety, the only state key lab in China that
specializes in rail traffic control and safety research. Currently, the
laboratory focuses on four areas:
- Railway traffic flow analysis and control theory
- Railway transportation safety and transportation organization theory and technologies
- Railway transport operation control system analysis and integration
- Mobile communications theory for exclusive use of railway transportation and key technologies
His visit ended with discussions on the promotion of
rail transportation activities in VTS, and in particular on the
establishment of a regular event on railway signaling, communications
and control as well as on the organization of special issues and
educational content on these topics.
VTS is currently recruiting volunteers worldwide to participate in
these activities. For more information and to get involved, contact Bih-Yuan Ku,
Land Transportation Activities Coordinator.
VP—Membership Fabrice Labeau also visited Harbin Institute of
Technology on 20 May, while IEEE VTS Chapters Committee Chair Pawel
Dmochowski visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University. They each took the
excellent opportunity to interact with local volunteers and share ideas
on VTS, the IEEE publications process, and wireless developments for
smart grid and limited feedback MIMO.
The tour was successful in generating local interest in VTS, and
efforts are underway to capitalize on this momentum and build strong
local VTS communities. In Nanjing, Prof. Jun Zheng (Southeast
University) is leading efforts to form a local VTS chapter; similarly,
Prof. Xuanli Wu (Harbin Institute of Technology) in Harbin and Prof.
Wen Chen (Shanghai Jiaotong University) in Shanghai are calling on
current and newly recruited local VTS members to help establish
chapters in their respective regions. |
