Rail transportation around the world is increasingly considered as a main mode of transportation for the reason of being rapid, cost effective, eco-friendly, and reliable.
With the continuous increase in railway transportation speed, density, and load, there has been an increase in accidents caused by rail defects. The most important feature of a railway system is its feature of being safe. Therefore, it is essential to maintain railways by continuous monitoring and a systematic approach to maintaining the safety level.
Derailments are the most common type of train accidents. Track and equipment failures are the primary causes of train derailments on main tracks. Broken rails are the leading cause of major accidents. Prevention of broken rails or welds is expected to yield a larger percentage reduction in train and car derailment rates than other accident prevention strategies.
Improving the prediction of conditions that cause broken rails can assist railroads in allocating inspection, detection, and preventive resources more efficiently, to enhance safety, reduce the risk of hazardous materials transportation, improve service quality, and maximize rail assets.
