Vehicles that Communicate with Traffic Infrastructure

V2I technology is revolutionizing how buses interact with urban traffic systems and offering solutions that reduce congestion and improve transit efficiency. Through the integration of advanced communication protocols, such as dedicated short-range communications and cellular vehicle to everything, buses can now communicate seamlessly with traffic signal systems to optimize traffic flow and prioritize public transit.

In Los Angeles, the Metro Rapid bus system exemplifies the transformative potential of V2I. Buses that are equipped with short-range communication modules transmit real-time position and timing data to connected traffic signals. When a bus approaches an intersection, the system can extend green-light duration or shorten red-light times, ensuring smoother passage. This approach has led to a remarkable reduction in journey times—up to 25%—while enhancing schedule adherence and overall system reliability.
