Self-driving vehicles are expected to be on roads in the United Kingdom by 2026 as the AV Act has now become law. AVs are expected to improve road safety by reducing human error, which contributes to 88% of UK road collisions.
The law will require self-driving vehicles to achieve a level of safety at least as high as careful and competent human drivers as well as meet rigorous safety checks before being allowed onto roads. Through this, deaths and injuries from drunk driving, speeding, tiredness, and inattention are expected to be drastically reduced.
