The Evolution of Automotive Software
João P. Trovão

The automotive industry stands at a pivotal crossroads as it navigates a rapidly evolving landscape driven by technological advancements and shifting priorities.

Once dominated by an almost singular focus on safety, the industry is now witnessing a transformative shift where quality and security are becoming the new pillars of software development. As vehicles become increasingly connected and autonomous, the stakes have never been higher. A recent comprehensive report on automotive software development in 2024 highlights this shift, marking a significant departure from past practices and pointing toward a future where the intricacies of code quality and cybersecurity are paramount.

Historically, safety was the primary concern, driven by regulatory mandates and consumer expectations. However, the rise of electric and autonomous vehicles, combined with the increasing connectivity of vehicles, has introduced new challenges and risks.

This shift is not merely a change in focus but a redefinition of what it means to deliver a safe and reliable vehicle in the 21st century. Next, the evolution of automotive software is explored, tracing its progression from an early emphasis on safety to the current demands for quality and security, supported by examples, case studies, and insights from industry experts.
