Västtrafik ordered 40 new trams for use in Gothenburg, Sweden. The new Flexity, known as the M34, is an extended version of the M33 tram currently in service. A comparison of the MC33 and MC34 trams appears in the figure below.
Alstom is manufacturing the M34 with its partner Kiepe-Electric, which provides the trams’ electrical parts while Alstom supplies the mechanical equipment. The new Flexity can accommodate 319 passengers, which is 50% more than the M33.
The additional trams will meet Gothenburg’s need for new ones, as the M33 and M34 models will replace the aging M28 and M29 models.
