VTS publications play a significant role in promoting R&D activities in the Society’s technical fields of interest. Our main technical journals—IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (TVT), IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine (VTM), and IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology (OJVT)—provide high-quality and high-impact venues for researchers and engineers to publish new studies in the latest R&D frontier.

In addition to regular papers in mobile radio and wireless networks, vehicular electronics, and intelligent transportation, the journals publish special series and issues in hot topics and emerging technologies, including the ongoing series on Connected Vehicles in TVT and on 5G and beyond communication systems in VTM, and the special issues below.

Blockchains in Emerging Vehicular Social Networks
TVT, June 2020
Advanced Vehicle Power Propulsion Systems
TVT, December 2019
Vehicle Connectivity and Automation using 5G Networks
TVT, September 2019
Communication Support for
Unmanned Air Transportation
VTM, June 2020
Service Verification and Performance
Validation for 5G Networks
VTM, December 2019

2019 Metrics of Success for VTS Publications

A popular statistic for journal citations, the Impact Factor is calculated as the number of citations of a journal divided by the number of papers published in the journal over a period of the two most recent years. According to the 2019 Journal Citation Reports released by Clarivate Analytics in June 2020, both TVT and VTM have a higher impact factor in 2019 than previous years, with 5.379 for TVT and 7.921 for VTM, ranking top 34th and 15th among 266 indexed journals in electrical engineering.

The following two figures show the journal impact factors in the past five years. As a new journal, OJVT does not have an impact factor yet.

On behalf of the VTS Board of Governors, I would like to congratulate the TVT and VTM Editors-in-Chief, Dr. Nei Kato and Prof. Javier Gozálvez, and to thank their editorial teams for the great achievements!

The number of paper submissions to both TVT and VTM continues to increase significantly, as well as a similar trend in IEEE Xplore downloads from the two journals.

TVT received 4032 new original submissions in 2019, an increase of over 20% from 2018. TVT papers comprised 1,140,083 IEEE Xplore downloads in 2019, with a resulting rank of 8th among all IEEE journals, up from the top 14th position in 2018.

Under the strong leadership of Dr. Nei Kato and Prof. Javier Gozálvez, the TVT and VTM editorial boards have been working diligently to accelerate the editorial process, thanks to high quality and timely paper reviews by many volunteers in our VT community.

The average duration from paper submission to first editorial decision was 7.5 and 13.9 weeks, and that from subm5ssion to e-publication was 29.8 and 16.1 weeks for TVT and VTM respectively in 2019. With full support from the VTS Board of Governors, currently both journals have no publication backlog.

IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology

This new gold standard open access journal, OJVT, has been launched successfully, thanks to the effective leadership of Editor-in-Chief Dr. Sumei Sun, and the dedication of her editorial board. This journal is fully open and compliant with funder mandates.

We aim at drawing on the expert technical community to continue our commitment to publishing the most highly-cited content. The open access journal has a rapid and yet high quality peer-review process.

So far, we have published 17 papers among over 50 submissions. The average duration of the first review cycle is 2.1 weeks, and the average duration from submission to online publication for the accepted papers is 3.5 weeks.

This new journal provides researchers in the VT community with an exciting opportunity to benefit from the high popularity of the IEEE Xplore® Digital Library with 5 million unique monthly users.
