The Workshop on Vehicular Networks for 5G applications was held on 9 January 2020 in Hangzhou, China. This workshop is sponsored by the Department of Information Science, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); IEEE VTS Zhejiang Chapter; and the Faculty of Information Technology, Zhejiang University (ZJU).

This event offers an annual review of research progress by major project groups supported by NSFC, and provides a forum for academic and industrial researchers to exchange recent results on vehicular technology. About 50 people from NSFC, Datang Telecom, Southwest Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and other entities attended the workshop.

Some high-ranking attendees included Zhaotian Zhang, Vice Director of NSFC Department of Information Science; Zhaohui Song, Head of Division 1 of NSFC Department of Information Science; Shanzhi Chen, Vice President of Datang Telecom; and Jiming Chen, Vice Dean of Faculty of Information Technology, Zhejiang University and chair of the VTS Zhejiang Chapter.

In the morning, major project group leader Dr. Shanzhi Chen hosted the workshop, and Prof. Jiming Chen gave a welcome speech. Dr. Zhaotian Zhang introduced the funding policy of NSFC, and emphasized the importance of Vehicular Networks in the new era of 5G.

Prof. Kan Zheng from Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications, Prof. Bo Yang from Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Prof. Pingzhi Fan from Southwest Jiaotong University reported their annual progress for three major projects. Experts from the advisory committees and Dr. Zhaohui Song provided detailed advice on research direction and future work for the major project group.

In the afternoon, Prof. Jian Zhang from Southeast University, Prof. Daxin Tian from Beihang University, Prof. Junhui Zhao from East China Jiaotong University, and Prof. Haibo Zhou from Nanjing University each gave an invited talk. Also, researchers from the major project group reported their recent results on vehicular networks for 5G applications.

At the end of the day, Dr. Shanzhi Chen concluded the workshop.
