Kansas City's New Streetcar
Harvey Glickenstein

On 13 May 2019, Kansas City, Missouri, received its latest and fifth streetcar. The new streetcar, number 805, will be joined by 806 later in 2019. Kansas City’s first streetcar service opened for revenue on 6 May 2016.

The 2-mile route runs along Main Street and serves Union Station, the Crossroads Arts District, Power and Light District, Central Business District, and historic River Market/City Market District. 16 stops are spaced every two blocks.

Streetcar ridership in the city had grown so fast that, before the end of 2017, the KC Streetcar Authority decided to order the two additional streetcars to supplement the original four. During 2018, KC Streetcar ridership logged year-over-year monthly ridership growth for seven straight months and closed out the year with 2,114,886 rides, up from 2,060,327 in 2017.

The KC Streetcar system marked its 5 millionth ride in September 2018 and its highest one-day ridership on 6 July 2018, with 19,181 trips. After delivery, Streetcar 805 was off-loaded from a flatbed truck and onto the tracks located along Second Street, just east of Oak Street. It underwent final assembly and shop trials for several days before being tested on the tracks.

Mainline testing was primarily conducted during overnight hours, when KC Streetcar is out of service. Examples of mainline tests include system propulsion, braking, communications, and a 300-mi burn-in trial to verify reliable operation of all vehicle doors and systems.
