Cohda Wireless, headquartered in Australia, has focused on chips to enable autonomous vehicles to connect with other vehicles and with Smart City infrastructure via V2X communications. These connections span vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) capabilities.
In the quest to deliver V2X capabilities to the volume automotive market, developers seek tools that allow them to develop secure solutions and expand the boundaries of V2X development into emerging application areas, such as truck platooning, but also markets in Japan, Korea, and Europe.
To bring these new applications to market requires tools that reduce the complexity of onboard unit development. To this end, Cohda has developed a V2X evaluation kit with support for functional safety designs across multiple regions including Japan. The kit also supports new use cases, such as platooning and dual-channel operation.
In addition, Cohda has taken its collision avoidance systems for underground mines and developed a vehicle positioning system able to eliminate GPS blackspots that exist in urban canyons between high-rise buildings. Such urban canyons can cause degraded accuracy in locations with compromised sky views, formed by high-rise buildings, underground carparks, and tunnels.
Using existing smart city V2X roadside infrastructure from any standards-based manufacturer, the Cohda system can identify vehicle position to submeter accuracy. The result is that positioning blackspots can be eliminated in city centers where they are most likely to occur.
