This year a modern record of 12 candidates stood for the 5
positions of Board of Governors (BoG) members, whose three-year terms start January
2017. The voting period for the annual VTS elections was 5 July – 6 September
2016 and was administered by IEEE. As a benefit of the large number of
candidates, turnout was a modern record too, with 26.25% of Society members
voting compared to 16.46% last year. The successful candidates were:
JR Cruz |
Abbas Jamalipour |
Fabrice Labeau |
Bih-Yuan Ku |
Richard Yu |
Richard, the only candidate who has not previously served on
the BoG, is a professor at Carleton University, Canada, which he joined in 2007
after time with Ericsson in Sweden and a Californian start-up. He is editor for
the Connected Vehicles series in the Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and
Vice-chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Green Communications and
Computing. His research interests include wireless networks, connected
vehicles, communication-based train control (CBTC), green IT, and security.
Elections for the 2017 executive positions took place at the
last BoG meeting of the year at VTC2016-Fall in Montréal. Several positions
were contested, and after some vigorous debate, which initially resulted in a
tie for one of the positions, the following candidates were elected as officers
to serve for 2017:
- President: Javier Gozálvez
- Executive Vice President: Alex Wyglinski
- VP—Mobile Radio: Jae Hong Lee
- VP—Motor Vehicles: Loic Boulon
- VP—and Transportation: Bih-Yuan Ku
- VP—Membership Development: Fabrice Labeau
