 As the only fully-sponsored journal of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS), IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (TVT) has had significant improvements over the last 10 years in both quantity and quality, and is serving its readers well. In particular, TVT has expanded its scope to address many emerging technologies for better vehicular operations and services.
In the era of the IEEE Xplore digital library, TVT—an evolved journal from previously known IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Communications—had the first and only issue in 1967, with the remark "published aperiodically". Publication increased to three issues in 1969, changed to 4 issues in 1970, and lasted until 1999 when it became a bi-monthly journal. Since Dr. Weihua Zhuang took over the journal in 2006, significant changes had been made. In 2007, this journal published 9 issues each year with submissions steadily increasing. In 2008, the annual submissions reached over 1000, and since have been consistently over 1500. Since I became Editor-in-Chief in 2013, we experienced a sudden surge in submissions with 2148 in 2014, breaking the 2000 mark, and 2217 submissions in 2015. Due to the increasing trend, and with the blessing of the VTS Board of Governors, we expanded the journal to monthly publications in 2015. Obviously, TVT is on a healthy track!
Since we tend to be most concerned about journal impact these days, we will befin with the impact statistics. According to Thomson Reuters’ Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) citation report, since 2007, the impact factor for this journal has improved steadily, while 5-year impact factor has been in the top group of telecommunications journals (see table).

TVT did experience a drop-off in the impact factor in 2014, which was expected due to an increased number of pages in 2014 and an editorial leadership transition. The good news is that two other quality metrics, Eigenfactor and article influence score, have increased, from (0.03380, 0.944) in 2014 to (0.03596, 1.017) in 2015. Currently, the journal is ranked 10th in 2-year impact factor and 6th in 5-year impact factor among telecommunications journals, and is ranked 19th in downloads. The journal is categorized in the top 25% in all four metrics: impact factor, 5-year impact factor, Eigenfactor, and article influence score, for the past 3 years, and is in the second category according to Chinese journal classification system used for academic evaluation, comparing to the third category in the previous year. In addition, this journal is leading the effort to develop emerging connected vehicles technologies. In 2015, TVT has initiated the Connected Vehicles Series (CVS), published twice each year, with the first installment in the December 2015 issue.
In short and thanks to the great efforts of its volunteer editors and contributors, Transactions in Vehicular Technology has become one of the premier journals in telecommunications. We look forward to even greater success in the future! |
