IEEE VTC2015-Spring brought together almost 800 researchers, designers and academics from the 44 countries across the world to Glasgow with the themes of 5G and Connected Vehicles. The conference was supported by Freescale, who showcased their research based in Glasgow on Intelligent Vehicles.
Unfortunately Humza Yousaf, the Scottish Government Minister for Europe and International Development, who was due to provide the official opening, could not attend. His party had won 56 of the 59 Scottish seats in UK parliament only 3 days before, so he had other things on his plate. In his stead, Honorary Chair Professor Tariq Durrani welcomed delegates before the opening plenary by David Soldani, VP and Head of Europe Central Research Institute at Huawei on 5G: The Nervous System of the Digital Society and Digital Economy. Slides for his talk, and the other plenaries, are available on the conference website.
The first day saw 12 workshops from European research consortia showcasing their results, and a special ‘Design Day’ on the final day of the conference featured sessions from Mathworks and National Instruments on using their tools, along with plenaries from Freescale on ‘Automotive Internet of Things’ and Mercedes-Benz on ‘Vehicle Safety and Automated Driving’.
5G was a common theme throughout the conference. The Wednesday plenaries included 5G Mobile Communications – Key Enabling Technologies and Recent R&D Results, from Wonil Roh, Vice President and Head, Advanced Communications Lab at Samsung, and the evening panel that day was What is Driving 5G? with speakers from Eurescom, Nokia, Bell Labs, BT and Ericsson
The conference was be the first major international conference to be held in the University of Strathclyde’s Technology Innovation Centre, and £89m facility in the heart of Glasgow bringing academia and industry together. |
