As the urban population increases year over year, so do the density and complexity of the integrated mobility systems. But when it comes to transport infrastructure, especially rail transportation networks, there are limitations on how much we can build new intra-city and intercity infrastructures.
The key limiting factors are real estate, capital cost, lifecycle maintenance and operation costs, workforce shortage, etc. Although these limitations vary by geographical regions, in general, to overcome these limitations and challenges, the rail industry has started taking advantage of artificial intelligence (AI) potentials, emerging technologies, and a digital approach.
In this context, AI represents a paradigm shift because it can help solve or alleviate most of the critical challenges that railways are facing.
