VPPC 2024 Salutes 75 years of IEEE VTS
Minh C. Ta, VPP Chair and IEEE VPPC 2024 General Chair; and Hicham Chaoui, IEEE VPPC 2024 General Co-chair

It is with immense pride that we announce the successful conclusion of the 2024 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC), held from October 7-10, 2024, in Washington, DC. This year's conference is especially momentous as we mark the 75th anniversary of VTS and IEEE's 140th anniversary. We are particularly excited about this year's partnership with the 2024 100th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, for a joint event that will mark the 100th VTC. This fusion of two major conferences offered an unparalleled platform for interactive and multidisciplinary discussions, making it a cornerstone event for professionals working on electrified vehicles and related technologies.

At the heart of VTS, the Vehicular Power and Propulsion (VPP) Committee is dedicated to advancing innovation and promoting interdisciplinary exchanges to enhance eco-efficient power and propulsion systems for electrified vehicles. Our activities include organizing VPPC 2024 and future editions, the yearly IEEE VTS Motor Vehicle Challenge competition, webinars, summer schools, and seminars; all aimed at fostering collaboration within the vehicle electrification community. With over 40 active members and 7 new additions for 2024, our mission continues to grow stronger.

IEEE VPPC has been a flagship conference of VTS since 2005, rotating between America, Europe, and Asia. It draws engineers, researchers, and industry professionals from around the globe, and this year's theme, "Connect Green e-Motion," reflects the focus on sustainable and innovative solutions for electric mobility. VPPC 2024 will feature keynotes, tutorials, technical sessions, panel discussions, and a celebration of the rich history and future of IEEE VTS.

IEEE VPPC 2024 showcased three distinguished keynote speakers:

Prof. Hiroshi Fujimoto (The University of Tokyo, Japan) shared the latest achievements on advanced control of electric vehicles and wireless in-wheel motors.

Burak Ozpineci (Corporate Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA) gave a presentation on traction drive components and charging trends for electric vehicles.

Prof. Yunwei (Ryan) Li (The University of Alberta, Canada) explored AC/DC microgrid structures for electric vehicle charging.

In addition to these groundbreaking presentations, IEEE VPPC 2024 featured a special panel session titled Electric Vehicles: Perspectives from Industry and Government Agencies, providing critical insights from thought leaders across sectors.

Other highlights included 8 regular tracks, eight special sessions, 18 oral sessions and 7 virtual sessions with a total of 118 papers (87 in-person, 31 virtual) selected from 212 submissions around the world.

IEEE VPPC 2024 is designed to foster deep interactions among participants through its various events. The conference began on Day 1 with four tutorials, followed by a Welcome Reception. On Day 2, the morning featured the Opening Welcome Plenary Session, followed by the VPPC Opening. All the Keynotes (6 of VTC and 3 of VPPC) took place during the morning plenary sessions, with technical sessions running across days 2, 3, and 4. A Cocktail Reception and Banquet Dinner commemorated the 75th anniversary of VTS on the evening of Day 3. Day 4 also included an afternoon of VPPC tours.

As our event unfolded in Washington, DC, we were already preparing for future conferences: VPPC 2025 will take place in Hangzhou, China, and VPPC 2026 will be held in Lyon, France. The international rotation ensures global participation and the exchange of diverse perspectives on vehicle electrification.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this event. To our sponsors and supporters, your contributions was vital in making this event possible. To the speakers and volunteers, your dedication and expertise were crucial to its success. Special thanks to the Technical Program Committee members for maintaining the high quality and relevance of the content. We are deeply grateful to the authors for sharing the outcome of your research, enriching the discussion and advancing innovation in vehicle power and propulsion.

We thank VTS Program Administrators Cerry Leffler and Rodney Clint Keele, and their team for their tireless work and collaboration in organizing a remarkable joint program for the benefit of VPPC 2024 and VTC2024-Fall participants. With their support, we continue to strengthen the vehicular power and propulsion community within VTS. A special acknowledgment goes to VTS President Weihua Zhuang and Vice-President-Conferences J.R. Cruz for their continued support.

Many thanks to all that took part in this multi-milestone celebration!
