3GPP Commitment to 6G
Claudio Casetti

On 4 December 2023, 3GPP’s Organizational Partners issued a joint press release vowing to develop 6G specifications.

The original scope of 3GPP in 1998 was to produce specifications for a 3G mobile system based on evolved Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication core networks and the radio access technologies that they supported. In time, 3GPP’s scope was amended to include the maintenance and development of the technical specifications and technical reports for evolved 3GPP technologies, beyond 3G.

With its work on 3G, 4G, and 5G specifications used by billions of communications services consumers globally, 3GPP stands ready to create the 6G future.

3GPP's Organizational Partners have announced that 3GPP will develop the next generation of global communications specifications. Based on its success over several technology generations—from 3G to 5G—3GPP is uniquely positioned to develop the standard for the 6G of mobile systems.

The organization’s consensus-based process delivers the critical technical specifications that provide a complete system description for the mobile networks that billions of users depend on.
