Virtualization Achieved for 5G
Claudio Casetti

As reported on 27 July 2021, Verizon and Samsung Electronics completed an end-to-end, fully virtualized 5G data session using C-band spectrum on a live network.

The milestone was reached in preparation for an upcoming 5G ultrawideband expansion using Verizon’s newly acquired C-band spectrum.

The trials, conducted on Verizon’s network (using C-band special temporary authority granted by the US Federal Communications Commission) in Texas, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, used Samsung’s virtualized radio access network (vRAN), which is built on its own software stack, and C-band 64T64R massive multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) radio in coordination with Verizon’s virtualized core.
