Making the Most of VTS Membership and Resources
Alexander M. Wyglinski, President

The primary mission of IEEE VTS is to enhance the professional development and growth of all of our members worldwide.

To achieve this mission, we are very fortunate to have a large number of dedicated volunteers from across our global community, who organize a wide range of activities, events, and services.

In so doing, we help our membership to disseminate new knowledge to the community, to learn about the latest advances in vehicular technology, and to network with other experts in order to form new collaborations.

I would like to share with all of you some of the many services we provide to all our members in support of their professional growth:

Over 50 VTS chapters worldwide!

Local chapters are an excellent way of networking with other VTS members within your geographical region, as well as learning about the latest advances in vehicular technology via technical seminars given by world-renowned experts, especially via our Distinguished Lecture (DL) program (an exclusive VTS membership benefit).

If your area has a VTS chapter, consider attending a meeting or technical seminar. If your area does not have a local VTS chapter, consider forming one. To learn more about VTS chapters, please feel free to contact VTS Chapters Committee Chair Oliver Holland.

The VTS Resource Center

The VTS Resource Center is an online repository of seminars, lectures, talks, and other video recordings of world-renowned experts presenting the latest advances in vehicular technology. To learn more and potentially contribute a lecture to it, please contact the VTS Resource Center Editor-in-Chief and VTS Education Committee Chair, Marina Aguado.

Excellent international and regional technical conferences

VTS sponsors several international and regional conferences, including its flagship conference, the semi-annual Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC), as well as the Vehicular Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC), and the Joint Rail Conference (JRC). Attend these conferences and learn more about the latest in various vehicular technologies, as well as network with world experts in these areas.; To learn more, or to propose hosting one of these events in your area, please contact VTS Vice President—Conferences JR Cruz.

High quality, high impact peer-reviewed technical publications

The IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (TVT) and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine (VTM) are the two premier publications on vehicular technology in the world, with impact factors of 4.432 and 6.038, respectively. If you have cutting-edge research in:

  • Vehicle-to-vehicle networking
  • Autonomous vehicles
  • 5G
  • NOMA
  • Millimeter wave
  • Electric railway communications

or related areas in vehicular technology, you should definitely consider submitting your work to one of these publications. To become an reviewer, associate editor, or organizer of a special issue, please contact VTS VP—Publications Weihua Zhuang.

Awards and recognitions for members of our community

An excellent way of supporting the professional development and growth of our members is to recognize their achievements within our community. VTS has several awards including the Hall of Fame Award, James Evans Avant Garde Award, IEEE VTS Early Career Award, Stuart Meyer Memorial Award, and many more.; Visit the VTS website to learn more about these awards or contact VTS Awards Committee Chair Gordon Stuber.

Support for young professionals

Preparing the next generation of engineers, technologists, and scientists working in vehicular technology area is a high priority here at VTS. We host a wide range of networking functions, seminars, panels, and other activities to help build a solid foundation for our young professionals so they can quickly grow their professional careers.; To learn more about and organize VTS Young Professionals activities, please contact VTS YP Liaison Syed Hassan Ahmed.

Support for standardization efforts in vehicular technology

VTS is very active in conducting standardization activities in established areas such as railway systems and vehicular networking, as well as exploring new areas for standards such as drone connectivity and autonomous vehicles.; To learn more about and participate in these activities, please feel free to reach out to VTS Standards Committee Chair Tom Kurihara.

Technical committees in emerging areas

VTS has created several ad hoc technical committees designed to provide members new communities in cutting edge areas in order to foster greater collaboration as well as support the exchanging of new ideas.; Currently VTS has committees in drone communications (Chair: Kamesh Namuduri), autonomous vehicles (Chair: Yue Wang), and electric railway systems (Chair: Jianghua Feng; Vice-chair: Pablo Arboleya).

Overall, VTS has a wide range of services, activities, and events to help support the professional development needs of any member within our society.; If you would like to learn more about maximizing the return-on-investment of your VTS membership, please feel free to contact either myself or VTS VP—Membership Richard Yu.

Remember that at VTS, your professional growth is our top priority!
