On 4 June 2011 the Society lost one of its most enthusiastic
and respected volunteers with the passing of Joel Snyder. Joel was an elected member of the Board of
Governors, and Awards Chair for the past 6 years. As befitting someone with extensive IEEE
experience over many years – culminating in his role as President of IEEE in
2001 – he also represented VTS on three other groups and councils within IEEE. The
professional accomplishments of Joel Snyder are detailed in an IEEE press release.
Joel, perhaps, can best be remembered in the sentiments of
those who worked with him in the Society.
“I have known
Joel for more than a few years as a VTS BOG member and will miss his wisdom,
courage, enthusiasm and experience.”
“This is a huge loss to our society.”
“Joel was so full of life and energy, and cared deeply
for IEEE and VTS. We shall miss him deeply.”
“I
have but the best and most pleasant memories of him as we … worked together within the Society over
the last few years.”
“He
will be sorely missed within and without VTS.”
"I will remember him for his untiring progressive attitude and perpetual sense of humor and hope that some of it has been left behind."
“I am so sorry to hear the news. Like other Board members, I remember Joel for
his courage and enthusiasm, but as being someone who would turn his hand to
anything to help out.”
“Joel was a
saint. I deeply respected him, admired him, and I am extremely thankful
for every minute we spent together. He could connect with people -
through empathy, respect, and goodwill - always looking to build up those
around him.”
“My heart goes out to his family and the many, many
people that know and love him.”
“This is sad news. Joel was a great
man, and a real character to hang out with.”
“He was always full of positive energy and enthusiasm
even when he had serious health problems.”
“Indeed, your memory will not fade, Joel - we cherish
the chats, little smiles and precious moments we enjoyed together!”
“For me, for over 20 years, Joel was a mentor and
friend. He will be truly missed.”
“I have known Joel for many, many years. He was a
very energetic person even when he was very ill. He took his assignments
seriously and did them well. I will miss his advice and humor.”
“Joel was one of the good guys.”
